Class style

Take it tothe floor.

Floorwork is the art of making the ground part of the dance. Slides, rolls, arches, and transitions that look effortless because you learned exactly where your weight goes.

What floorwork is

Most dance happens standing up. Floorwork happens on the way down, on the ground, and on the way back up. It is slow and sensual one moment and sharp the next, and it asks for strength and control more than flexibility.

A Floorplay floorwork class breaks every move into steps you can actually follow: where your hands go, which knee takes the weight, how to roll without landing on a bone.

How class builds

You warm up your spine, hips, wrists, and knees, because the floor is honest and a cold body feels it. Then you drill the transitions on their own, slowly, until the path is clear.

Once the pieces are solid, they go into choreography. By the last run you are moving through the whole sequence with the music, and the floor stops feeling like the end of the dance and starts feeling like the best part.

What to bring

Knee pads. Your knees will thank you. Wear clothes that cover your knees and let you slide, and skip anything with zips or buttons that dig in when you roll.

Socks or bare feet work for most floorwork. If the routine mixes in heels, the class description will say so, and your heels can come along.

Floorwork and heels together

Floorwork and heels are made for each other. Many Floorplay routines go from a strut to the floor and back up in a single phrase. Taking both styles makes each one easier: floorwork builds the strength, heels builds the attitude. If you only have time for one this week, pick the one that scares you a little more.

Questions

Do I need knee pads?

Yes, we recommend them for every floorwork class. Any dance or volleyball knee pads work.

Is floorwork hard on the body?

It asks for strength, but every move is taught step by step with a safe way down and back up. Go at your own pace and skip anything that does not feel right.

Can beginners take floorwork?

Yes. You do not need flexibility or experience; the technique is broken down for first timers. See heels for beginners for more first class tips.

Can I take floorwork online?

Yes, when a live floorwork class is on the schedule. Clear some floor, lay down a rug or a mat, and wear knee pads. See the live classes page.

Do I wear heels in floorwork?

Usually not. If a class mixes heels and floorwork, its description on the schedule says so.
